It has not only beautiful melody but also beautiful lyrics. It combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance, and acrobatics. The form was extremely popular in the Qing dynasty court and has come to be regarded as one of the cultural treasures of China.

We recently learned about the Beijing Opera in our culture lesson. Here’s what we found out.

When you first hear about the name you might think Beijing Opera started in Beijing. But it’s actually a combination of Anhui Opera, Han Opera, and Kun Opera. It is a comprehensive performing art which combines singing, speaking, dancing and acrobatic fighting. The facial makeup depicts daily life, the shape and pattern show the people’s age and their life story, and the color shows what is the person’s personality. For example, red represents heroic people, black represents integrity and unselfish people, and white represents insidious people.

” 生(shēng)、旦(dàn)、净(jìng)、丑(chǒu)” are the four main roles of Beijing Opera, It is mainly based on the characters’ gender, age, identity, status, character, temperament, etc!

Beijing opera is one of the quintessences of Chinese culture, also it is one of the most important symbols of Chinese cultural tradition. Its development is more than 200 years old, and it is the accumulation of Chinese traditional culture and history.
