Weekend Activity-Chinese Traditional Painting Workshop

Lets get arty this weekend!!!!This Saturday, Chinese Academy organized an activity for Chinese traditional painting. The history of Chinese painting can be compared to a symphony. The styles and traditions in figure, landscape, and bird-and-flower painting have formed themes that continue to blend to this day into a single piece of music. Painters through the ages have made up this “orchestra,” composing and performing many movements and variations within this tradition.

We invited a very famous painting teacher from local to teach the Chinese as well as English students painting. Today’s topic is flower.Consider these three important ideas that help make Chinese painting what it is:

The past is the foundation of the present and future, and demands respect. Painters learn their craft by copying earlier masters.
As humans, we are but a small speck in the breadth of space and time.
That said, a good painting reveals the artist’s character, which in turn contributes to the meaning of the painting. To really understand a piece, it helps to learn about the artist and the times in which he or she lived.

Artists use ink and water-based colour on paper or silk to create traditional tableaus, most often depicting landscapes. Additionally, the themes are rarely unique, but are variations of earlier compositions, continuing a solid historical thread. The differences are in the details.Chinese painting is closely related to Chinese calligraphy since lines are used in both of them. Not only limited to contour drawing, lines are used to express feelings, thoughts and concepts. For different subjects and purposes, different lines are used. They can be straight or curved, hard or soft, thick or thin, pale or dark and the ink can also be dry or running too. The use of lines and strokes is one of the major characteristics of Chinese painting which make it distinct from other traditions of paintings in the world.
